VOID CRUISER PIKACHU

This is my use for one of the Ajax's I acquired. I originally bought one and when I got it home only the instructions, no plastic were in the box. All Airfix kits come with a free parts replacement slip, so I filled it out in a fit of lunacy and sent it off. I also took it back to the shop where they said they'd get it replaced. About a month latter I'd given up on both of them but one day when I got home I found a package for me which contained the whole Ajax, the very next day the shop called to say they had a replacement in stock, so I got two ajax's for the price on one plus the post to England. I should do this more often.

I was reading a sci-fi modelling magazine one day when I found a kind of space battleship Yamato type ship. I was already thinking of doing something similar myself and this got me thinking. I decided to get any old cheap ship and kit bash. This resulted in the graff spee model (As its self) and the two ajax's originally for a diorama with the graff spee. The ship in the magazine had a helicopter landing pad symbol on it like those used on today's warships and this looked like a poké ball so I called the idea the void cruiser pikachu, and since I can't think of anything better the name stuck. I started out by building the hull of the ship as per normal except that I removed all detail from the after deck and turned the forward deck upside down so the outside surface was smooth. I then cut from the stern along the waterline to about half the ships length. With the hole thus created covered with plasticard, I added bits of the superstructure on the Bottom (really top) and the top (really bottom) of the ship. The superstructure is mostly bits of the kit except the bridge and the mast supports which are wood and wire. I then added the secondary guns (3 of the 4 in the Ajax kit) and filled in the numerous holes, gashes etc. left by my kit bashing efforts. This done I sprayed a coat of white knight grey to show up any flaws which I fixed then I gave a coat of various citadel paints some of which I mixed specially. Btw the symbols on the turrets are greek capitol letters (see those physics textbooks come in handy after all). The flag is made of some photocopy paper and citadel paint. Maybe I'll make something like it but bigger for Hebredies Icolnoclast but more about him later.
