MSG-0Xa
(that's Mobile Suit Grot zero X alpha to you) aka the generibot. First a
word about the name. My brother has a soft toy hippo called grot and when
I found out about gundam I sort of thought of mobile suit grot (instead
of mobile suit gundam) and when I made this the name stuck. Mobile suit
grot it a sort of generic mecha that I tried to put all the cool features
I could think of on. It has a sword, (of course, I'm VERY big on swords)
and loads of other bits you may be able to identify from various mecha styles.
What it actually is, or was, is a 1/144 scale Gouf custom that my brother
traded me for my X-wing (sorry folks no super detailed X-wing, but I doubt
I would have ever finished it). I didn't want to make it as a Gouf because
he'd painted it desert yellow already and I couldn't be stuffed fixing it
though it's a good looking mecha. So I took the joints, limbs, torso etc.
and built this 1/100 scale mech. I sawed through all the limbs and lengthened
them by adding balsa inserts and a fair amount of miliput (two part epoxy).
This done I removed all the spikes from the shoulder pads and filled all
the holes. I then cut off the sides of the fixed skirt armour. To replace
the skirt armour I cut the rear end off a 1/48th scale mosquito (aeroplane)
and it was just the right size for part of a new skirt (the gods of modelling
smile on me!). Modifications were made to the joints to allow greater freedom
of movement. The feet are the original gouf feet cut down at the back and
given "platform soles". |

These
extend out the front of the original foot and have the "toes" attached
to them, guess where I got this idea from (yes you'll be seeing THAT mech
on the site sometime). The torso was lengthened and the "groin" made less
groin like (geocities don't like pornography on their sites hehe). The
sword has a balsa blade which was coated in superglue and various putties
to seal the grain and give a smooth surface for painting. The handle was
cut into the sword and then wrapped in solder for the grip.
MSG was undercoated with white knight and then painted in citadel fortress
grey, codex grey and regal blue. The sword is painted with a mix of silver
and black. For the first time on a model I experimented with the armour
modelling technique of using pastels to create smoke blackening etc. and
it worked OK. Didn't show up to well in the photos but I was just practising.
